"a unique and remarkable record of a major part of Ampthill's development which will be of interest and increasing value to future generations"
Originally part of Ampthill's extensive Warren, the area was awarded to the local feoffee's as part of the parish enclosure. after 80 years they sold the land for development at an auction in the White Hart, and The Knoll became one of the first areas to be subjected to the newly created Urban District Council's building bye-laws, despite the lack of adequate services in the town.
The Knoll: A Mirror for Ampthill provides a fascinating insight into the development of The Knoll and Ampthill, together with the important role played by its inhabitants. in addition there are detailed descriptions of the individual plots and known residents.
